Nationwide Video Contest Finds $10,000 Grand Prize Winner in Pittsburgh

Local College Student Wins Big in ForRent.com’s Video Contest

NORFOLK, Va.-(August 4, 2008) - If you knew you could win $10,000 by creating a video about-of all things-furniture, would you do it? Brendan Walsh did. This 20-year-old, Art Institute of Pittsburgh student received the phone call of his life when he found out he was the grand prize winner of the “If Only Your Apartment Furniture Could Talk” video contest created by ForRent.com, a leading research Web site for searching apartments for rent.

As a digital media production major, Walsh thought it would be worth a shot to submit a video in the nationwide contest that challenged apartment seekers to tell ForRent.com why they deserved to win $10,000. However, the plea had to be made by the apartment’s current furniture. Walsh’s winning video, “Furniture Talk,” gave apartment renters a “fly on the wall” point of view of the interesting couch conversations their apartment furniture has when they’re not around. One couch tells the story of his lazy owners and why they should win $10,000 to add more furniture to their apartment.

Walsh submitted his short video to the contest Web site, where viewers got to vote for their favorite videos. As a freshman in college, he never imagined the effort he made in his first video would pay off so well.

“The day they announced the winner, I went to the site and saw my video,” says Walsh. “I didn’t even realize I had won. I just thought it was cool they put my video on the home page. I really took advantage of social media to get my video in front of voters. Social media is my life! It’s like a chain reaction. I tell 10 people, they tell 10 people and it spirals. I even created a Facebook group for my video submission to gain more views and votes.”

The once-struggling Pittsburgh college student and budding musician learned about the contest while perusing apartments in For Rent Magazine® and on ForRent.com. Long gone are the days of Ramen noodles at breakfast, lunch and dinner for this self-proclaimed “super stoked” college student. With his winnings, Walsh plans to stock his refrigerator and cabinets, then share the wealth with his roommate and friends who helped create his prize video. He says he might even record a demo tape in a recording studio to help jumpstart his career as a musician.

Walsh’s video can be viewed at http://www.winapartmentfurniture.com/.
